Secrets d’histoire : Vercingétorix, le premier des Gaulois
Stéphane Bern introduces audiences to famous name in this episode of Secrets d’Histoire: Vercingetorix. The name alone takes French people back in time to when France was still called Gaul and Rome’s powerful army was trying everything it could to invade.
A great speaker and charismatic figure, Vercingetorix rallied his people and galvanised his troops to battle the Roman legions, despite them being the most powerful in the world at the time.
But nothing could stop this young Gaul of royal descent from resisting the imposing Caesar, fuelled by honour and a thirst for freedom.
Vercingetorix is much more than a brave warrior and learning about him teaches us a great deal about the everyday life of the Gaul civilisation: habitat, crafts, beliefs and ancestral customs which the druids alone were the masters of.
Based in the incredible Gallic Village reconstruction in Rieux-Volvestre near Toulouse, Stéphane Bern whisks us back in time to experience the incredible life of Vercingetorix, one of those popular heroes unfairly treated by history and whose one defeat at Alesia overshadowed all his victories.
It all began in early 52 BC when all the Gauls elected him supreme leader of the most important armed rebellion against the Roman invaders…
Available on catch-up on the France TV website until February 25th. 2024.

Les gaulois au delà du mythe (Jean-Jacques Beineix)
Directed by: Jean-Jacques Beineix
Produced by: ARTE France, Cargo Films, Inrap, CNRS Image
Who were the Gauls?
Jean-Jacques Beineix joins archaeologists on digs and in laboratories to review twenty years of discoveries.
Books are being published, special features are appearing in magazines and exhibitions are making us question our beliefs… Everyone’s talking about the Gauls. But who were they? They were certainly unusual, since they withstood the centuries and have become legends despite little remaining of them. The Gauls left no written records and were defeated by their opponents. Those who came after them demolished their wooden buildings. Our memories of them gradually faded as others told their stories in their place and according to their interests. It’s been over 2000 years since Caesar’s legions defeated Vercingetorix; it’s time they made their comeback. The myth of “our ancestors the Gauls” has become very popular. How did history make the Gauls famous – for better or for worse?
The new gaul
The Gauls have been making their big comeback since Napoleon III brought them to the fore in the 19th and the recent expansion of our roads and railways. The preventive excavations authorised by developers has played a huge role in unearthing countless relics and separating fact from fiction. The film explores this revolution. With the help of historians and archaeologists who he joins at excavation sites, Jean-Jacques Beineix tries to separate the myth from history and review twenty years of discoveries and the mysteries that remain. The film also attempts to understand why we constantly revisit the lives of the Gauls for the sake of our identity and mythology.
